Duane Street 8:15-4:30:  50,069-68,512 + benefits package

Founded in 1976, The Washington Market School is a non-profit preschool serving children ages 2-5 that skillfully blends the time-tested philosophies and methodologies of Maria Montessori with Reggio Emilia. We celebrate and foster each child’s growing independence, natural curiosity, and social-emotional development and problem solving skills, meeting each child exactly where they are from the moment they arrive. Licensed by the New York City Department of Health and meeting the requirements of all regulatory agencies, The Washington Market School boasts two distinct and uniquely special sites located in Lower Manhattan, just blocks away from each other.

Position Summary

The Group Teacher Position will serve as a key member of the teaching faculty. Teaching teams consist of three teachers in each classroom and the Group Teacher must be able to lead as well as collaborate with others to support the learning and development of our young learners, as well as support the families in the community.

Primary Responsibilities

• Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities in each of the curriculum areas of the Montessori and Reggio prepared environment;  
• Create documentation that coordinates with classroom curriculum;
• Engage in studio classes and collaborate with studio teachers (art, music, chess, movement and drama and library) about classroom curriculum;
• Observe and evaluate each child’s progress by documenting and developing child portfolios to be shared during conferences and given to the child at the end of year;
• Through mission-appropriate methods, ensure that children’s actions and interactions promote an environment conducive to meaningful, respectful and focused learning; 
• Design and maintain a thoughtfully prepared, aesthetically beautiful, organized and clean environment that mindfully incorporates Montessori works and Reggio-inspired provocations; 
• Ensure that equipment and materials are kept in excellent condition;
• Ensure safety in the classroom, to include vigilance around student allergies;
• Set the tone and lead on daily communication with parents in collaboration with team members;
• Plan for parent conferences with team members and lead conferences;
• Reply to emails within 24 hours of receipt so as to maintain excellent communication with the school and families;
• Collaborate with outside providers, such as OT’s and SLP’s, if a child needs individualized plans
• Write parent conference notes and summaries;
• Write School Reports that accurately and thoughtfully describe children’s strengths and areas to grow and provide guidance and direction to teaching team as they write School Reports;
• Display respect and empathy for students by maintaining confidentiality, tact, and consistency and with them and their families;
• Participate in scheduled staff meetings, training sessions, etc with a mindset towards ongoing professional growth and development ;
• Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications 

• BS in Early Childhood or related field; 
• Masters Degree in ECE preferred;
• Knowledge of Reggio Emilia philosophy and experience preferred;
• Knowledge of Montessori philosophy, (Montessori Credential and experience preferred);
• At least 2 years experience working with children ages 2-5 in a preschool or daycare setting; 
• Complete all required Department of Health paperwork including background check, health form before official start date;
• Ability to lift as much as 35 pounds;
• Ability to navigate stairs without assistance;
• Ability to stand, stoop, bend and sit on the floor for long periods of time;
• Ability to work in-person.
