Genna Scarano is our multi-skilled Data Manager and Front Desk Coordinator at Hudson Street. She is also the person behind the Remini app and has been enormously integral to our reopening as we put health and safety at the forefront. Genna grew up in Brooklyn. She received her BA in Linguistics-Cognitive Science and Italian from Pitzer College and an MA in International Education from NYU.
To learn a little more about Genna, read this brief interview:
What do you do at WMS? This is my 4th year at Washington Market. As the Front Desk Coordinator at our Hudson Street location, I facilitate communication between parents and teachers and maintain all student files. Additionally, I am our School Data Manager. In this new role, I manage our school-wide databases, oversee our new Remini health screening app, and help teachers with technology in the classroom.
What path lead you to working at WMS? After graduating from college and spending a year teaching English in Italy, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in education but wanted to transition from teaching to school administration. Working at Washington Market has given me the opportunity to wear many hats; I am constantly learning new skills and continue to grow as an administrator.
What’s your favorite thing about WMS? I am so appreciative of Washington Market’s Staff Development program, which helped me to pursue a Master’s degree in International Education from NYU last year. I am proud to work for a school that strongly encourages and supports staff in continuing their education.
What’s something we may not know about you? I love to tap dance! I started taking lessons when I was 3-years-old (my mom tap danced as a child as well) and continue to take drop-in classes at dance studios in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
What’s a fond memory you have from when you were in preschool? My favorite part of the day was definitely music. I remember we had a xylophone in our classroom that I loved to play.
